Doula Support

PLEASE NOTE: APRIL IS CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED AND WILL THEN BE ON MATERNITY LEAVE UNTIL 2017

First and foremost, doulas are evidence based!

Studies have shown that births with a doula in attendance have...

  • 25% shorter labour

  • 60% reduction in epidural requests

  • 50% reduction in c-section rate

  • 40% reduction in oxytocin use

  • 30% reduction in analgesia

As a Doula, I offer a continuous presence and support your physical, emotional and spiritual needs. I acknowledge and guide you through this unique and beautiful journey of pregnancy and birth. I inform, nurture and empower both you and your partner so you can relax and trust the birthing process, knowing you are truly supported.

Doulas aren’t a new concept and it was common place hundreds, if not thousands of years ago for a community to have a ‘wise woman’, ‘witch’ or ‘healer’ who supported women and their families through pregnancy and birth. These women would protect the birthing space, ensuring no distractions and keeping you grounded through the birth.

As a doula, I do not offer medical advice but do offer a wealth of knowledge around birth and help empower you to have a truly positive experience. I am able to do this through providing information, support and nurturing you, without judgement. I am balanced and have complete confidence in you and your abilities.

I support all births from homebirth to caesarean and I do not believe there is a right way to give birth. I believe informed choice, nurturing, love and true support are the ingredients needed for a positive birth experience and all of these can be given, no matter how you birth your baby.

What can you expect from me as your doula?

When you choose me as your doula you can expect:

  • Clarity about my availability. If I am already booked with another client I can offer shared care with another doula in the area. If I feel I will be unavailable (either on holiday or courses etc) then I wouldn’t take you on as my client... sorry but continuity is important to me as your doula.

  • At least two antenatal visits with mini catch ups in between if you like. Here we can discuss everything about you and your upcoming birth.

  • I will be on call from 38 weeks until 42 weeks. This means I will be available for you 24/7. My phone will be glued to my hand! I will not drink or travel anymore than 30mins away.

  • When your birth day arrives I will be with you as soon as you feel you want me. I will support you and your birth partner continually until a few hours after birth. I may be with you a few hours or few days! (Yes it happens!) Whatever the circumstance, I am completely committed to you.

  • After the birth I will visit you twice within the first 7 days to help you settle in with your newborn. I can support feeding, cook you a meal, run errands...etc.

  • You will receive one of my 'Mama Packs' which contains:
    - Voucher for a FREE bump/baby photoshoot and print from A.S Photography
    - £5 off a pregnancy massage
    - 20% Harmony Hypnobirthing group courses
    - 10% off products at The Fox Den
    - £5 off Closing the Bones from the wonderful Sarah the Doula
    - Cord tie from Heartstrings

Hiring a Doula

Hiring a doula is really personal. Luckily within the Bucks, Beds and Northants area there is many of us to choose from!

So, why might you consider hiring me?

  • I’m a natural nurturer and enjoying mothering others.

  • I’m empathetic and a good listener. I listen with the intension to understand, not reply.

  • I have experience of both using and working within the maternity system. I know who/what and how to navigate it. I also have experience working with doctors and midwives and respect their roles and form good relationships with them.

  • I have good childcare in place and great support from family, friends and my husband. This is important and means I am fully present and with you during your birth, rather than worrying about my own children.

  • I’m pretty nifty with a rebozo and know many techniques to help assist your baby into a good position or give you some relief from your bump. Not sure what a rebozo is? Ask and I can show you during a consultation.

  • My hands are pretty magic too, and I can provide massage during pregnancy and labour to help you stay calm and relaxed.

  • And I am good with my voice and can see hypnotherapy techniques to help you stay calm, relaxed and banish any fears or anxieties you have.

  • I love and live for tea and cake! Let’s face it, this is important and goes hand in hand with building positive relationships.

However, despite all of these great skills and techniques to support you, if the chemistry isn’t there then we aren’t right for each other! When choosing a doula I firmly believe you need to be the perfect fit. Like ‘oh my goodness I cannot believe how good we are together’ kind of fit.

So if you think we’ll get on and you like what you see/read then please get it touch and we can meet up for an informal chat tea/coffee... maybe some cake...
